R Introduction (in-person)

R Introduction (in-person) In-Person

Workshop location: Glucksman Library, The Edge (computer room 1st floor - GL1-025)

R is a programming language for statistical computing, data analysis and visualisation. Open source and supported by a large community it can be adapted and extended with a wide range of 3rd party packages. It is a good language for new programmers to learn due to its straightforward, object-oriented style and its readability.

This in-person training is aimed at researchers with no previous programming experience. The workshop will make participants familiar with the underlying concepts and principles, enable them to write basic scripts, and understand and re-use scripts written by others. Finally, it will lay the foundations for further self-guided engagement with programming.

Demonstrations and explanations will be alternated with small hands-on exercises done by the participants during the workshop. Computers with the software needed are available in the workshop room, but participants are encouraged to bring their own devices. An email to prompt the installation of RStudio will be circulated before the workshop.

The workshop can be attended as part of the Researcher Development Programme, earning 1 credit towards the Researcher Development Digital Badge. The workshop is based on Data Carpentry lessons.
